Policy-based monitoring of Db2 and PostgreSQL systems

Setting up monitoring is a major effort in large production environments, as the configuration often has to be adjusted for each individual database. With Speedgain for Databases, there is an option to monitor databases based on predefined policies. This conveniently reduces the time required and the error rate.

The challenge

In large production environments with many databases, there are three main challenges when configuring monitoring: 1) It must be possible to configure monitoring for a new database as efficiently as possible. 2) When monitoring settings are changed, it should be possible to do so in a simple way for a large set of databases. 3) Basically, the risk of misconfigurations should be minimized and a reasonable monitoring setting should be found for each database type. For this purpose, the DBA should be able to fall back on predefined proven standard settings. All these three points are cumbersome in most tools, since the parameters usually have to be set individually for each database and the DBA is hardly supported in this.

What are the benefits of monitoring policies?

Monitoring policies allow the creation of universal configurations for different types or groups of databases, but also allow for dedicated customizations.

What solution does Speedgain for Databases offer?

Speedgain for Databases comes with a predefined set of policy templates for different classes of databases. For example, there are different templates for Db2 and PostgreSQL databases. From these templates, new individual policies for special groups of databases, such as an OLTP database or a datamart, can be derived very easily. The definition of policies for entire database groups drastically reduces the administrative effort. New databases can easily be assigned to a policy without complex configuration. Likewise, customizations are quickly implemented even for a larger number of databases of the same type, since only the policy for this database type needs to be adapted. Customization for each individual database is not required.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Fast configuration of new databases and simple adaptation of existing database configurations using policies
  • Reduced administration effort
  • Reduced susceptibility to errors

New monitoring requirements can be responded to quickly and comprehensively. If, for example, production databases need to be monitored in more detail due to an acute problem, this can be successfully completed within a few minutes by adapting just one policy for all databases. Even when adding new databases to the monitoring, no complex configuration is required, as only one policy needs to be selected.
